Magic Box: Buffoon Playing a Lute

This week I started my "Fancy Animal" homework for the Magic Box course.  I couldn't resist choosing "Buffoon Playing a Lute" by Frans Hals for my portrait repaint.  The expression on this man's face is priceless!

Here's the original painting:

His mischievous expression reminded me of cats when they're up to no good, so I chose to reinvent him as a cat.

Here's some of my sketchbook studies:

And below's my cat buffoon!  I'm going to redraw his face a bit before I start painting in color.  I want to bring in the grin from the original, and maybe perk one of his ears up to give him more of that roguish air.  Can't wait to share him again once he picks up some color!

Griffin Sketch

Griffin drawing

This past week was a tough one.  My asthma flared up with a vengeance which left me downhearted and very, very tired.  I've basically just been sitting on my couch in a medicated stupor watching Disney movies and reading books.

I'm happy to say my breathing's finally returning to normal now.  I'm slowly getting back to my usual energetic self but I'm about a week behind in everything.  I had meant to have the Mask Maker finished by now and lots of other sparkling, glorious things but alas!  That's not what my lungs had planned.

While I catch up, here's a griffin from my sketchbook.  Griffins are a part of a world I'm thinking up, so you'll be seeing more of them around here in the coming months.

More Rocks

Finished some more rocks!  Despite the weeks going by way faster than they should, things are getting done.

This last detail shows the gold accents I painted on some of them.

She speaks to the moon
A wish made from stars.
Her dream of lost love,
Adrift close and far.

A quick acrylic ACEO I painted this week.

Magpie Character Sketch

Meet Magpie.  She's a character in a long-term personal project I'm just beginning (hint: what has pages, panels, and speech bubbles?).  The whole project is in it's preliminary concept and planning phase.  I see lots of late-night dates with my sketchbook and story notebook in the near future.  ;)

Had these sketches floating around Instagram for a while and thought it was about time I posted them on here as well (with some significantly better lighting than on Instagram).  They're both done in good old ballpoint pen, one of my favorite sketching materials.

The first one's some characters I drew in the early hours of Art Mart, and the one below is a little illustration of two young fairy folk that I'm hoping to turn into a digital painting at some point.

And just for fun, here's my bowl of rocks waiting to be turned into paintings:
