Fairy Queen Sketch

Fairy Queen pencil sketch by Veronica Kosowski

I only have a few pages left in my old sketchbook so as a fun pre-New Year challenge I've decided to fill it up by January 1st.  Here's a Fairy Queen concept sketch from one of the pages.

Merry Christmas!

Forest Christmas painting by Veronica Kosowski

Merry Christmas!

Here's a little holiday something from me to you.  I'm so grateful for all you lovely interweb folks who take the time to follow my art and chime in with encouraging comments.  You inspire me so much, thank you!

Hope you're having a great holiday with too many sweets and lots of boisterous family around (said whilst chomping on yet another slice of a chocolate orange, yum).

The Ice Maiden WIP

Ice Maiden painting by Veronica Kosowski

Started an acrylic painting today based on Hans Christian Andersen's story "The Ice Maiden".  Less people know this story than the ever-popular "Snow Queen", but it's been one of my favorites for years!

Digital Watercolor Forest

Digital Watercolor Forest by Veronica Kosowski

Painting forests with my digital watercolors!

I really just want to Blue Skidoo into this painting.  Anyone else watch Blue's Clues back in the day and wish "skidooing" was real?

For those who have no idea what I'm talking about, the main characters Blue and Steve had the ability to transport themselves into paintings by saying the magic rhyme: "Blue skidoo, we can too!" How awesome is that?  I can think of so many paintings I'd like to visit, I'd have to move to a museum!

Forest creatures watercolor painting by Veronica Kosowski

Forest creatures watercolor painting by Veronica Kosowski

Can't believe it's already December 1st, this year is flying by!

I finished two new foresty ACEO paintings yesterday.  The first one features a forest spirit and the second the same sad forest creatures from one of my Inktober sketches a while back.  I think these guys might become regulars in my character lineup, they're so fun to draw!

You can find both of these paintings in my Etsy shop or by clicking the Etsy banner in the sidebar.

Minstrel Sketches

"Play for me, minstrel, play
And take away our sorrows
Play for me, minstrel, play
And we'll follow.

Here, listen, can you hear
The haunting melody surrounding you,
Weaving a magic spell
All around you?"

- from the Blackmore's Night song "Play Minstrel Play"

Minstrels are one of my favorite aspects of medieval culture.  I love the idea of wandering musicians bringing tales and songs to all who would sit to listen.

Scavenger Creature Vis Dev

The scavenger creature makes his second appearance on the blog today!  These are some of my quick, very scribbly sketches exploring his movement and personality.

I'm planning to do a finished concept painting with this guy, so I started thinking about what kind of environments he could live in to account for his looks.

Why does he have scruffy hanging hair?  Why does he need stripes?  Why is he bluish-tealish-orangeish in color?  Why the bird feet?

At first I kept thinking of very open, grass-covered landscapes, probably since I was thinking of him as a kind of hyena.  But when I Google-searched 'savannah' I got a surprise: trees covered in hanging Spanish moss in Savannah, Georgia.

Bam!  Just like that I knew where this guy belongs.

Here are some of my sketches exploring a humid forest environment with lots of hanging plants, pools of water, and sunlight filtering through tall trees to create shadows for my creature to lurk about in.

I'm going to be doing some color and texture studies soon, so stay tuned for those.  Until next time!

Weekend Travels

Hi everyone!  No art for today as I was away on a weekend road trip visiting the SF Bay area.  It was good to be back in the woods again even if just for a little bit.  Redwoods are the best!

Here's some more pictures from my travels:

There was this awesome little gorge with a waterfall and stream.  Here's me standing at the bottom ogling trees.

Ah afternoon light!  A painter's dream!

The beginning of the waterfall.

My college mascot tee-hee!

Climbing rocks is good exercise for lazy artists.

We took Highway 1 for the first part of our journey back instead of our usual route on the 101 or 5 freeways.  It takes forever, but the gorgeous ocean and forest-covered coastal mountains are worth it!

This was a beautiful beach in Carmel.  Families of seals were swimming by, and there were tons of birds eating lunch in the water.

Also saw a whole beach full of elephant seals on the way back!  They were really something!

When left to my own devices I'm often a horrible workaholic, but road trips are one of my favorite ways to relax and recharge.  It always feels good to step away from my work for a while and get some new perspective on things.

When I'm wrapped up in an involved project I tend to forget that going outside and feeling the world around me is as much a part of being an artist as the actual painting bit.

The Owl-Dragon

The owl-dragon walks through the woods at night.  Few have seen this mystical creature.

Magpie Color Test

Thought it would be fun to color some of my Inktober drawings, starting with Magpie here.  I really love the watercolor brushes I recently purchased from Kyle Webster's Gumroad shop, they're great for getting soft background elements and textures.  I'm gonna be doing a lot more experimentation with them and coloring line art, so stay tuned!

V For Vendetta

"Remember, remember
The fifth of November"

Couldn't resist some V for Vendetta fan art seeing as its November 5th!  Great book, and V's one of my favorite graphic novel characters.

Scavenger Creature Design in Progress

A strange avian-hyena scavenger creature in progress.

Now that Inktober is over, one of the next things I'm going to tackle is getting caught up with my Oatley Academy homework!  To quote Rafiki, "it is time!"

Inktober Day 26: Lady Amalthea

"I have been mortal, and some part of me is mortal yet.  I am full of tears and hunger and the fear of death, although I cannot weep, and I want nothing, and I cannot die.  I am not like the others now, for no unicorn was ever born who could regret, but I do.  I regret."

The Unicorn and her human form as Lady Amalthea from one of my favorite books, Peter S. Beagle's novel The Last Unicorn.

Inktober Day 25: Forest

Feeling homesick for the forest, so decided to draw one for Inktober today.  I don't think I'll ever feel truly at home until I'm under the trees again.

Inktober Day 18

A sorcerer for Inktober Day 18.  Inspired by the dark and often eerie illustrations of Harry Clarke.
